WAC Honors Fick, 3 Northridge Mates
Robert Fick of Cal State Northridge and Travis Lee of San Diego State shared the baseball Player of the Year honor in the Western Division of the Western Athletic Conference, league officials announced Wednesday.
Fick, a junior catcher from Newbury Park High and Ventura College, led the WAC with 71 runs batted in and led the Western Division with 15 home runs. He is batting .402.
In all, four players from division champion Northridge were chosen to the all-division team. Joining Fick were Matador third baseman Eric Gillespie and pitchers Erasmo Ramirez and Robert Crabtree.
Jeff Weaver of Fresno State and Simi Valley High was the third pitcher and also was selected the division’s Freshman of the Year.
Team Handball
Denny Fercho, 26, of Camarillo is among the 16 men selected to the U.S. Olympic team.
Football
Former Newbury Park High receiving star Leodes Van Buren remained in custody in Ventura Wednesday after making an appearance in municipal court on a parole violation. Van Buren was assigned an attorney and is due back in court for a full hearing next week.
Van Buren, who in 1993 helped Newbury Park to an undefeated season and a Southern Section Division III title, was arrested Monday after allegedly threatening to kill himself and his infant son.
Softball
Verdugo Hills’ second-round City Section 3-A playoff game against Bell today has been moved to Sunland Park.
