Cleveland Surprises Carson, 4-3
Cleveland High barely squeaked into the City Section 4-A playoffs as the 12th and final seeded team, but the Cavaliers showed they belong with a 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded Carson in a first-round game Tuesday at Carson.
Eva Friedberg had two hits, drove in a run and scored the winning run in the seventh inning on a passed ball.
Letizia Lucero had two hits and drove in a run for Cleveland (5-6), which plays fourth-seeded Monroe on Thursday.
In other City Section, first-round playoff games:
Granada Hills 11, Taft 1--Jessica Creith (10-8) allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked none for the Highlanders (12-10) in a 4-A game at Granada Hills.
Granada Hills will play at San Pedro on Thursday in a rematch of the 1995 division title game won by the Pirates.
Van Nuys 7, Crenshaw 0--Regina Perez (12-6) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five for the Wolves (12-6) in a 3-A game at Van Nuys.
Tatiana Gipson had a bases-loaded triple and Rita Ortega hit a double and a triple for Van Nuys, which faces Westchester on Thursday.
Verdugo Hills 18, Los Angeles CES 0--Rian Standley’s 10th home run of the season highlighted an 11-run fourth inning for the top-seeded Dons (18-3) in a 3-A game at Verdugo Hills called after 5 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.
Jodi Kent hit a home run for Verdugo Hills, which meets Bell in the second round Thursday.
South Gate 4, North Hollywood 3--Kim Rabas hit a two-out two-run home run to tie the score, 3-3, in the sixth inning, but the Huskies (9-14) gave up three consecutive singles with two out in the seventh to lose a 3-A game at South Gate Park.
Thousand Oaks 1, Westlake 0--Junior left-hander Jennifer Sharron (17-6) struck out 15 batters in her third third perfect game of the season for the Lancers (18-8, 8-5) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.
Newbury Park 4, Agoura 0--Kristi Fox (14-3) pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts for the Panthers (20-5-1, 11-1-1) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
Camarillo 2, Royal 1--Tommee Payan squeezed home Mandi Comer with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Scorpions (19-1-1, 11-1-1) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.
Simi Valley 10, Channel Islands 1--Lori Tande had three hits and threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Pioneers (15-10, 8-5) in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
Saugus 12, Canyon 2--The Centurions (21-4, 9-0) clinched at least a tie for their third consecutive Foothill League title.
Hart 11, Burbank 0--Mary Colleran (18-6) pitched a one-hitter and Melissa Harrison had three hits, including two doubles, for the Indians (20-6, 8-1) in a Foothill League game at Burbank.
Burroughs 2, Valencia 0--Jennifer Tyler (12-7) threw a no-hitter, striking out four and walking one for the Indians (14-8, 5-4) in a Foothill League game at Valencia.
Dos Pueblos 6, Ventura 1--Marie Gensler pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts for Dos Pueblos (14-10, 9-4) in a Channel League game at Ventura.
San Marcos 2, Rio Mesa 1--The Spartans (17-6, 10-3) lost a chance to tie San Marcos for the Channel League lead and allowed the Chargers (19-4, 12-1) to clinch the title in a game at San Marcos.
Buena 10, Hueneme 0--Amber Carr pitched a two-hitter, striking out eight, as the Bulldogs (17-8, 9-4) won a game at Buena called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.
Crescenta Valley 4, Arcadia 2--Becca Baldrige’s three-run triple in the fifth helped the Falcons (19-6, 8-1) clinch at least a tie for the Pacific League title.
Quartz Hill 5, Ridgecrest Burroughs 3--The Rebels (19-7, 7-2) moved into a first-place tie with the Burros (14-9, 7-2) in the Golden League.
Jodie Cox (10-9) and Quartz Hill teammate Amber Slaton each hit a home run.
