Butch Hobson, the former Boston Red Sox manager now managing in the minors, was arrested in Pawtucket, R.I., over the weekend and charged with cocaine possession. He was given a leave of absence Monday as manager of Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, the Philadelphia Phillies’ triple-A farm club in the International League. . . . Randy Johnson missed his scheduled start for the Seattle Mariners because of a sore back that forced him to leave his previous start early. Johnson will be examined today by team physician Larry Pedegana. . . . American League umpire Rocky Roe said the death of mentor John McSherry triggered his decision to enter a health, weight loss and conditioning program. . . . The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled left-hander Darrell May from triple-A Calgary and demoted closer Dan Miceli to double-A Carolina.
