More than 350 needy mothers waited in line Monday to get their hair styled, nails painted and makeup applied as part of an early Mother’s Day celebration at a skid row homeless facility in downtown Los Angeles

“This is one day I can dedicate to myself,” said 42-year-old Elena Bohorquez as a hairstylist combed her hair. Bohorquez, a general relief recipient, lived on the streets for several months before moving to a small apartment near MacArthur Park with her 10-year-old son.

“I like the company here. It helps me forget about my problems,” she said.

The Fred Jordan Mission, which serves about 1,500 people daily, provided free make-overs for homeless and impoverished mothers. The complete make-over is valued at more than $100 a person.

About 120 people, including professionals from 10 beauty schools and companies as well as Mission staff, donated their time and talents. More than $12,000 worth of beauty products were also donated to the mission.

“The event is so popular that we are continuing it for its eighth year,” said Willie Jordan, president of Fred Jordan Mission.
