More than 600 people are expected to turn out at Ventura Harbor on Saturday for WalkAmerica 1996, a nationwide charity event to raise money for the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. Every year, sponsored individuals and teams from across the country walk designated routes in their communities to support the March of Dimes.
In Ventura, participants will walk a nine-mile loop starting at Ventura Harbor to the Ventura Pier and back to Ventura Harbor Village, where a wellness fair will be held all day.
The walk starts at 8 a.m., although participants can arrive later.
Last year, walkers raised $30,000, and organizers have set a higher goal for this year. Now in its 26th year, WalkAmerica is one of the most successful charity events in the country, raising $66 million for the March of Dimes.
Money generated by Saturday’s walk will be used toward development of neonatal intensive care units at three Ventura County hospitals.
