Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man after he fired at another man and the deputies in the Athens area, officials said Tuesday.
Deputies saw a man later identified as Janero Gordon, 20, of Los Angeles running after and shooting at a man with a laser-sighted handgun on San Pedro Street near 140th Street shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, said Lt. Mike Woods.
When Gordon saw the deputies, he turned and fired several times at them, Woods said. The deputies fired back and chased him by car as he ran into the carport of an apartment complex in the 200 block of Allenhurst Street.
As the deputies got out of their car, Gordon “pointed his gun at them while running away,” Woods said.
The deputies fired at him, striking him once in the chest and once in the leg, deputies said. Authorities recovered a loaded Glock 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun at the scene.
