Water Board to Seek Residency Statements

Under a policy approved this month, new directors of Mesa Consolidated Water District will be asked but not required to swear that they are residents of the district.

The issue arose last year when some residents challenged board President Tom Nelson’s eligibility because he owned a home in Seal Beach, outside the water district.

Nelson, who has since resigned from the board, maintained that his primary residence was a converted office in Costa Mesa.

The board considered requiring residency statements but settled on a voluntary system instead.
