WASHINGTON — President Clinton on Tuesday nominated the first woman to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in the Marines.
If confirmed by the Senate, Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Carol A. Mutter would be the first female officer in the history of the Marines elevated to three-star rank. Mutter is commander of the Marine Corps Systems Command.
White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry said Clinton has asked Mutter to serve as deputy chief of staff for manpower and reserve affairs, a post in which she will be responsible for all policy and planning for Marine Corps manpower issues.
