Prep basketball--Jeffrey Berokoff, selected to The Times’ all-county boys’ basketball second team, is a 6-foot-3 sophomore. This fact was incorrectly reported in Tuesday’s Prep Extra.
Year: Sr.
High: 6-5
Position: C
Most overlooked all-county player averaged 21.7 points and was held to fewer than double figures twice. Ranks sixth in county in scoring and shot 57.7% from the floor. Had to play post for the Knights, but will probably be a small forward in college.
*
KEVIN AUGUSTINE
School: Mater Dei
Year: Jr.
High: 6-0
Position: G
Field general who led Mater Dei on a 34-game winning streak. He averaged 18.5 points and five assists. “He is their best player,” L.A. Crenshaw Coach Willie West said. Most valuable player at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic and the South Coast League MVP.
*
CHAD BOBERG
School: Cypress
Year: Sr.
High: 6-4
Position: F
Hard-working, over-achieving, never-say-die player led Cypress to its second 20-plus victory season and another Empire League title. Third-leading scorer in the county at 22.5 points per game. Will probably play small forward at one of four Utah-based schools pursuing him.
*
CHRIS BURGESS
School: Woodbridge
Year: Jr.
High: 6-10
Position: C
Led the county in scoring, averaging 26.3 points. Fourth in rebounding at 10.6. Took more shots than anyone in the county with 579 attempts. He was first-team all-county last season, too. Many say he resembles former Woodbridge star Adam Keefe, now with the Utah Jazz.
*
ERIC CHENOWITH
School: Villa Park
Year: Jr.
High: 7-0
Position: C
Major factor in Spartans’ first playoff appearance in 20 years. A spider on the backboards, he was tough to shoot over and hard to get around. Averaged 10.6 rebounds, third-best in county. Visited Duke recently; spotted wearing a Blue Devil sweatshirt at playoff game.
*
JOSH GREER
School: Esperanza
Year: Sr.
High: 6-5
Position: F
Once his left foot heals from a second surgery to correct a stress-fracture, he’ll be a plus in St. Mary’s program. He averaged 20.6 points and 10.6 rebounds, fourth-best in county. A real banger under the basket. Led the Aztecs to a Sunset League title.
*
IKE HARMON
School: Santa Ana Valley
Year: Sr.
High: 6-5
Position: F
The silent type who could get the job done in the shadows of a high-profile teammate, he stood solid in a strange season for Valley that included injuries, illnesses and forfeits. Averaged 22 points, fourth-best in the county, and 11.2 rebounds, tops in the county.
*
ALLEN KRIST
School: Santa Margarita
Year: Sr.
High: 6-8
Position: C
Never made a pledge he didn’t keep, leading the Eagles to a Southern Section II-AA title. A team player. “You can take me out of the game, but you can’t take my teammates out,” he said once. Averaged 20.1 points and 9.7 rebounds. Headed to Southern Methodist.
*
DAVID LALAZARIAN
School: Tustin
Year: Sr.
High: 6-7
Position: F
A “three-man” who handled the ball smoothly like a guard. Second in the county in scoring, averaging 23.7 points, while making 56.4% of his shots. Wasn’t bad at the free-throw line, either, shooting nearly 80%. Will join former teammate Doug Gottlieb at Notre Dame.
*
DANE PLOCK
School: Estancia
Year: Sr.
High: 6-1
Position: G
One of the top vote-getters by coaches at the shooting guard spot. He can shoot the lights out in streaky fashion, something Cal State Fullerton desperately needs when Plock gets there next season. Averaged nearly 18 points and made 43.8% of his three-point attempts.
