Schools Warn of Bogus Encyclopedia Pitch
Officials alerted residents Monday to reports of a salesman falsely representing Santa Ana Unified School District as a beneficiary of encyclopedia sales.
The district has received two complaints from Roosevelt Elementary School parents, officials said, one of whom was distressed that the district had recommended that parents buy encyclopedias priced at $1,800 a set.
The district has notified schools to report people selling products that they say will benefit the district.
Assistant Principal Pam Rush said the district has not recommended P.F. Collier Inc. encyclopedias, and officials suspect that other parents may have been contacted.
P.F. Collier’s Santa Ana regional manager, Miguel Palacios, said he had been unaware of the complaints. He reaffirmed that the company has no affiliation with the school district and said that company policy prohibits it from misrepresenting itself to potential buyers.
