Amtrak Returns to Refundable Tickets

Two weeks after introducing nonrefundable tickets on some of its trains, Amtrak has reversed itself, making the tickets refundable again, but for a fee. An Amtrak spokeswoman said the change was made to keep fee policies consistent and that consumers had not complained.

Travelers may again get refunds for tickets on most of the carrier’s reserved, long-distance overnight trains, including discount fares, Auto Train discount fares and All Aboard America fares--but it will cost $20 per adult ticket and $10 per child’s ticket. As announced in mid-February, Amtrak is now charging the same fee for a ticket exchange.
