Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Prognosis Grim for Cardinal Krol
Doctors sent Cardinal John Krol home, saying he is unlikely to recover from kidney complications that have persisted since he was hospitalized more than two weeks ago. Krol, 85, the retired archbishop of Philadelphia, was hospitalized Feb. 14 for fluid in his lungs attributed to diabetes-related kidney problems. A blood clot was found in one of his lungs six days later. Doctors said last week that the cardinal’s lung function had stabilized and was improving, and they took him off a respirator. But Krol continued not to respond to medication intended to treat the underlying kidney complications.
