World IN BRIEF : GAZA STRIP : Arabs Crack Down on Illegal Weapons
The Palestinian Authority, under Israeli pressure to crack down on Muslim militants, said Arabs holding unlicensed weapons could be jailed for up to 15 years. The warning was issued after the Israeli army said its soldiers in the Gaza Strip had captured five Palestinian guerrillas Friday who were on their way to carry out a “murderous attack” on a Jewish settlement. A Palestinian police deadline to all Arab residents of areas under Palestinian control to hand in their guns--part of a drive against militants in the wake of two Hamas suicide bombings in Israel last Sunday--expired Friday.
