Gomez Leads UCLA to Upset
Freshman Erica Gomez had seven of her 25 points in a 38-second span late in the game Thursday night as the UCLA women defeated No. 14 Oregon State, 68-56, at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins, 12-12 overall and 7-8 in the Pacific 10, held Oregon State scoreless for almost eight minutes late in the game and outscored the Beavers, 15-3, in the final four minutes.
After A.J. Dionne’s basket with 8:10 remaining gave Oregon State (19-6, 11-5) a 53-51 lead, Gomez made two free throws to tie it with 7:08 to play.
Nickey Hilbert’s jumper with four minutes left made it 55-53, then Gomez stretched the lead to 62-53 when she sank a three-point basket at the 3:20 mark, made another three-point shot, was fouled and made the free throw with 1:16 remaining.
A free throw by Tanja Kostic with 44 seconds left, and Anette Millerstrom’s layin 17 seconds later was the only scoring for the Beavers in the final 8:10.
Kisa Hughes added 18 points and had 14 rebounds for the Bruins.
Kostic led Oregon State with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Oregon 67, USC 53--The Trojans (11-3, 6-9) got 25 points from Tina Thompson and 17 points and 10 rebounds from Adrian Williams, but the Ducks (17-9, 9-7) had a more balanced attack and won at USC. Betty Ann Boeving led Oregon with 19 points.
