A 1970 Pentagon study tried to account for some CIA-sponsored spy missions in North Vietnam. The report, kept secret until recently, shows U.S. officials had reason to believe some commandos might still have been alive. But nothing was done to get them out of incarceration, and many languished in prisons well into the 1980s:
