Countywide : Board to Consider Auditor for Assessor
County officials will ask the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to select a consultant to conduct a management and operations audit of the assessor’s office, which supervisors have criticized for not processing property tax assessment appeals on time.
The board originally requested the audit last year after Assessor Bradley L. Jacobs announced he would not defend some disputed property valuations because his office didn’t have the staff.
Beginning in 1993, the number of people seeking property tax assessment appeals skyrocketed, creating a backlog.
Several appeals passed the two-year deadline without being resolved, forcing the county to reduce the values.
The county bankruptcy killed hopes of significantly expanding the assessor’s staff to deal with the backlog.
