Biker Dog and Master Take a Ride to Court

Is there anything illegal about taking a dog for a ride on a motorcycle? On Feb. 21, a judge will decide.

That’s the court date set for Harley the Siberian husky and her master, die-hard Harley-Davidson biker Jeremiah Gerbracht of Woodland Hills.

Gerbracht was ticketed in November by a Los Angeles police officer who spotted the pair cruising on Gerbracht’s motorcycle in the Canoga Park area.

The officer cited Gerbracht under a part of the state’s motor vehicle code that prohibits a person from riding on a part of a motor vehicle not intended for the use of passengers.

Gerbracht is contesting the ticket, arguing that, despite her human-like intelligence, Harley is 100% canine. The attorney representing Harley and Gerbracht, well-known motorcyclist-rights advocate J. Russell Brown Jr., says the case is a no-brainer.

So will Harley actually appear before the judge?

“You betcha!” says Gerbracht. “Well, I mean, if I can bring her. I don’t want to be disrespectful to the court.”

Since the story of Harley’s court battle appeared, Gerbracht, a retired animal trainer, said he has been busy fielding calls from supporters and others interested in promoting the colorful couple.

A bagel shop in Woodland Hills has introduced a new bagel called the “Husky Harley Biker Bagel Hot Dog,” and a camera crew is scheduled Tuesday to shoot the pair riding on a motorcycle for a British documentary on Americans and their pets.
