Whitewater St. John’s broke two state records on Jan. 12 in a 143-25 victory over Long Beach Youth in a Freedom League boys’ basketball game. St. John’s broke records for margin of victory, 118 points, and points in a half, 90. The previous record for margin of victory was 116 points, which was done twice, most recently by San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s in 1994. St. John’s 90-12 halftime lead broke the record of 85 points set by San Francisco Balboa in 1993. David Hamilton scored 55 points for St. John’s, which pressed until halftime. . . . Fontana boys’ basketball Coach Mike Southworth resigned last Thursday. He said that his intensity level was not sufficient and that new Coach Cliff Dodds, an assistant under Southworth for the last five years, might be able to communicate more effectively with his players. . . . Indio has hired Ovidio Macado as its football coach. He replaces Ed Munson, for whom he was a defensive line coach. . . . Cathedral City’s Greg Fernandes resigned as coach of the football team after one year and a 4-6 record. No successor has been named.
