Space Leased for WellPoint Offices

Executives from Blue Cross of California have leased more than 45,000 square feet of Camarillo office space for their WellPoint Health Networks, instead of proceeding with plans to build an office complex of their own.
Company spokesman Larry Bryant said the offices inside the Unisys Building on Camino Ruiz will employ 375 workers. But he was unable to say how many of those would be new jobs.
“A significant number of them will be new hires,” Bryant said.
Blue Cross of California was considering construction of a huge office complex for WellPoint in a move that would have brought 7,000 new employees elsewhere in Camarillo.
But the company dropped those plans when it announced a merger with Health Systems International, another health-care company situated directly across the street from WellPoint’s Woodland Hills office complex.
Although the merger plans have since dissolved, “there are no plans to construct anything at this time” in Camarillo, Bryant said.
He said Blue Cross of California signed a five-year lease.
“We decided not to continue with the purchase of the property, but we are committed to doing something in Camarillo,” Bryant said.
