Marvin Hayes; Bass-Baritone Sang Baroque, Romantic Repertoire

Marvin Hayes, 69, bass-baritone whose appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony and Chicago Symphony orchestras spanned four decades. A native of North Carolina, Hayes began his career during World War II with USO appearances in Europe. After the war, he studied under Gwendolyn Koldofsky at USC, Lotte Lehman at the Santa Barbara Music Academy and Pierre Bernac in Paris, developing an extensive repertoire from the Baroque and Romantic periods. After his lengthy concert career, he served on the voice faculties of Pomona College and CalArts. On Dec. 31 in Los Angeles of complications from a brain tumor.
