An Epic Drama by Hawaiian Troupe
HONOLULU — A hula troupe whose fiery, primal style has won international recognition, will perform one of the foremost epic dramas in Hawaiian culture here this week.
“Holo Mai Pele,” a five-act saga tracing the travels of the volcano goddess, Pele, and her youngest sister, Hi’iaka, will be presented by Halau o Kekuhi. Thirty dancers, eight percussionists, five chanters and four narrators tell the story, using choreography dating back more than 300 years. Although the performance is in Hawaiian, English-language narrators introduce each act.
“Holo Mai Pele--Pele and Hi’iaka: The Epic Dance Drama” will be performed Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu; Feb. 3 in Hilo, and April 19 and 21 in Waimea. Tickets for the Honolulu performances, priced from $30 to $50, are on sale at the Blaisdell ticket office (808-591-2211) and the Connection ticket outlet, (808-545-4000).
