May Childs, 104, silent screen actress and oldest member of the Crow Indian tribe. A consultant on Crow traditions, Miss Childs was a direct descendant of Sits in the Middle of the Land, who represented the tribe in negotiations for the Ft. Laramie treaties of 1851 and 1868. She lived in a tepee until she was 5 years old. A rodeo queen in 1913, Miss Childs attracted the attention of movie scouts. She played the lead role in silent films involving Native Americans, including “Before the White Man Came” and “Eagle and the Fawn.” In later years, credited as Mae Old Coyote, she had small character roles in such films as “Big Sky,” “Dirty Dingus McGee” and “Little Big Man.” On Sunday in Billings, Mont.
