IRVINE : City Plans Takeover of Library Branches
- Share via
Continuing its move to pull out of the county library system, the city this week issued a notice of intent to take over operations of its two libraries.
The move must be approved by the Board of Supervisors, but council members say no strong objections have been raised during preliminary talks with county leaders.
Mayor Michael Ward and Councilwoman Christina L. Shea met with Supervisors Marian Bergeson and Roger R. Stanton this week to discuss Irvine’s intentions of operating the Heritage Park and University Park libraries.
City officials say that the $2.8 million contributed annually by the city to the county system could be better spent in partnership with the local school district and community college. Councilwoman Paula Werner will meet with representatives of the Irvine Unified School District and Irvine Valley College next week.
