CERRITOS — Cerritos Valley Christian steamrolled Calvary Chapel, 55-27, Friday night at Valley Christian High.
The Crusaders (6-1, 2-0) were led by quarterback Kirk Saarloos, who completed 10 of 13 passes for 232 yards, and running back Kenchasa Amos, who ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns, including an opening kickoff return of 90 yards, in 19 carries.
Valley Christian’s offensive line simply overpowered the Eagles, who fell to 3-3, 1-1.
“It was really fun to put up more than 50 [points] tonight,” Saarloos said. “I can’t say enough about our offensive line. It’s pretty easy to pass when you don’t get hit. I don’t think [the Eagles] touched me all night.”
Amos also credited the offensive line.
“Our line was making some pretty big holes to run through tonight,” Amos said.
Of his 90-yard kickoff return, Amos said, “At first I thought they were going to catch me. I could hear them behind me and I didn’t want to get caught, so I ran faster and faster.”
The Crusaders’ defense also came up big, sacking Calvary Chapel quarterback Dan Murrieta four times for minus-27 yards.
“We’ve challenged our defense not to have to rely on our offense to win,” Valley Christian Coach Mike Wunderley said. “Since the Mesa loss, we’ve told our kids we want a full 48 minutes from them.
