Committee OKs $85 Million for Subway
A House-Senate conference committee recommended that $85 million be allocated this year for Los Angeles subway construction, Los Angeles transit officials said Friday.
The committee recommendation is expected to be voted upon by both chambers next week.
“We realize the current budget climate in Washington is extremely lean, so we are appreciative of the recommended funds for the Red Line,” said Franklin E. White, chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The $5.8-billion subway has been beset with problems. Past MTA Chairman Mike Antonovich had waged a campaign urging Congress to “pull the plug” on the subway.
