Congress established through the Voting Rights Act that the right to vote was so important that a person’s ability to read and write English should not deny access to the polling booth. In August, 1992, Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act, the Language Assistance Provisions, was expanded to ensure the voting rights of Asians and Latinos. Los Angeles County was required to provide voting materials in Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Japanese. But unfortunately, [not] Korean.
Community participation in the electoral process insures that the rights and interests of the Korean community are heard. Without bilingual ballots, the Korean community will be unable to stop the flow of anti-immigrant legislation.
