South Bay : Chamber Orders Murals Project

Downtown El Segundo will be getting a face lift this month when the Chamber of Commerce launches a mural program to spruce up the city.
A portrait of downtown El Segundo in 1917, the year the city was incorporated, has been commissioned, in addition to a mural of the 1911 Standard Oil Refinery, which became the Chevron Refinery in 1977, and a local sports heroes mural. For $10, residents can add their prints to Handprint Alley, a colorful passageway off downtown’s Main Street.
According to spokeswoman Nancy Cobb, the Chamber of Commerce will add potted plants and benches and a downtown heritage trail along 12 historical sites. The El Segundo Civic Center will also be renovated.
Cobb said the $150,000 project will be funded in part from a $10,000 donation from the Chevron Refinery. She said donations are being solicited from area businesses, and the chamber hopes to sell limited-edition posters of the murals for $150 to raise money for the project. The City Council has set aside $30,000 for the Civic Center renovations.
“We want to emphasize the positive aspects and the history of El Segundo in this project,” Cobb said.
