HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: WEEK 4 : Westlake Gets Jump-Start in League Play

OXNARD — Westlake High wanted to use Friday night’s Marmonte League opener at Channel Islands to set the tone for the league season.
Mission accomplished.
Westlake trounced the Raiders, 32-9, and it could have been worse. The Warriors had touchdown runs by tailbacks Jamal Harris and Jonathan Weems called back on penalties.
“We came off a game last week [a 37-7 loss to Hart] where we didn’t execute,” said Westlake’s Steve Aylsworth, who passed for a touchdown and also caught one. “Tonight we came out, played ball and got the job done, even with the touchdowns called back.”
Westlake (2-1-1) scored the first two times it had the ball. The first drive covered 55 yards in four plays and was capped by a 40-yard scoring run by Weems. The second covered 35 yards in five plays, with Aylsworth throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to Tim Bogle for a 14-0 Westlake lead with three minutes to play in the first quarter.
Westlake scored again with a minute to play in the half when Aylsworth made a diving catch in the end zone on a seven-yard pass from Casey Preston.
Channel Islands’ Ryan Brunsell kicked a 29-yard field goal to get the Raiders to within 20-3 at halftime.
Westlake scored in the second half on touchdown runs of 34 and two yards by Harris, who had 132 yards in 14 carries.
Channel Islands (2-2) scored its touchdown with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter when Jerry Ahching caught a six-yard pass from Charles Merricks.
