Country-Cliche Time : EMILIO, “Life Is Good”** Capitol Nashville
Tejano singing star Emilio brings no surname, nor much of his Latino heritage, to his first album aimed at the country-music audience. Were it not for Spanish-language versions of two songs he also sings in English, you’d never guess he’s had five albums for Capitol’s sister label, EMI Latin. His attractively twangy voice has a dusky edge that occasionally flirts with soulful expression.
But the qualities that might allow Emilio to stand out from the crowd are buried, while cliche-ridden tunes leave him sounding like one more undistinguished hat act from Nashville.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
