17 Picketers Arrested in Newspaper Strike: Eleven picketers were arrested during the weekend at the Detroit Free Press printing plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., after they violated a court order that limits to 10 the number of picketers who can demonstrate in front of the plant’s driveways, a police spokesman said. In a separate clash, Detroit police said they arrested six picketers on suspicion of disorderly conduct, alleging that the picketers tried to interfere with delivery trucks leaving the Riverfront printing facility. About 2,500 press workers, mailers, drivers and newsroom employees walked off their jobs at the Free Press and Detroit News on July 13 in a dispute over work rules, proposed job cuts and pay system changes. The Free Press, owned by Knight-Ridder Inc, and the News, owned by Gannett Co., have separate editorial products, but are published by a joint operating agency called Detroit Newspapers.
