PREP EXTRA: ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Kingman Scores From One to Give El Modena Victory
- Share via
ORANGE — El Modena fullback Dan Kingman scored on a one-yard run with just over four minutes remaining in the game to lead the Vanguards to a 10-6 victory over Sunny Hills in a nonleague game Friday night at El Modena.
Kingman scored on fourth and goal. El Modena Coach Steve Howard decided to keep things simple when he called the game-winning play.
“I went up to [offensive tackle] Tony Romo and I told him that Kingman was going to be running right behind his butt. I wanted our biggest running back to run behind our best offensive lineman.”
The Vanguards (2-0) controlled the ball for just over 19 minutes of the first half, but came away with only a 3-0 halftime lead. Aaron Santana, who rushed for 168 yards in 32 carries, fumbled at the Sunny Hills one-yard line, where Lancer defensive back Chris Zeiler recovered with 1:48 left in the first half.
Sunny Hills (0-1-1) took the second half kickoff and drove 86 yards in 12 plays, scoring on one-yard run by Chris Velotta. Jon Infante had his extra-point attempt blocked by El Modena’s Chad Adams, and the score remained 6-3.
El Modena gained 231 yards on the ground and held Sunny Hills to 139 yards in total offense. A pass by Lancer quarterback Greg Garand was intercepted by El Modena defensive back Bobby Calderon with 1:21 left in the game to stop the Lancer drive.
