Woman Charged After Girl, 13, Gets Abortion
LAPORTE, Pa. — A woman faces criminal charges for driving a 13-year-old girl across the state line to New York to get an abortion without her parents’ consent.
Prosecutors say the woman’s 19-year-old stepson had impregnated the girl.
The woman, Rosa Marie Hartford, 39, was charged with interfering with custody of children and corrupting a minor. She could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
Pennsylvania requires women to wait 24 hours before getting an abortion and requires females younger than 18 to get a parent’s consent. New York has neither restriction.
Hartford drove the 13-year-old about 60 miles north to a clinic in Binghamton, N.Y., last month.
Hartford said the girl was a friend of her stepson’s, but denied that he had impregnated her.
Prosecutors disagree. Michael Kilmer was arraigned Wednesday on rape charges. He is free on $25,000 bail.
Hartford was freed after arraignment Thursday pending an Oct. 12 hearing.
