Kim Mortensen
SCHOOL: Thousand Oaks
SPORT: Cross-country
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Fourth in the 3,200 meters in the State track championships in June, Mortensen began the season as one of the nation’s top returning runners. She lived up to the billing Saturday with a runaway victory in the Seaside Invitational in Ventura.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Mortensen’s time of 16 minutes 35 seconds over the three-mile layout at San Buenaventura State Beach destroyed the course record of 17:03 set by Maribella Aparicio of Fillmore in 1992. But Mortensen is not obsessed with breaking course records. “I just want to run well against the top people in each race,” she said. “If I do that, the times will take care of themselves.”
