SmithKline Files Suit Against Antacid Rival: The battle between the world’s drug giants for America’s heartburn sufferers flared this week, with SmithKline Beecham announcing a suit against a rival that makes the Pepcid AC heartburn remedy. SmithKline Beecham alleges that the Johnson & Johnson/Merck & Co. joint venture used “blatantly false claims” in commercials for over-the-counter Pepcid. SmithKline makes a rival medicine, Tagamet HB, which it launched earlier this month. Merck and Johnson & Johnson defended the Pepcid AC ads. “We have solid support for our claims and are confident they will be substantiated in court,” a Merck spokesman said.
