America West President to Retire Early: A. Maurice Myers, who helped America West Airlines emerge from bankruptcy protection last year and back to profitability, announced he will retire early at the end of the year. Myers, 55, has been the Phoenix-based carrier’s president and chief operating officer since January, 1994. William A. Franke will continue as chairman and chief executive and assume Myers’ responsibilities until a successor is named. The company said a search for Myers’ replacement will begin immediately. America West emerged from 38 months under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Aug. 25, 1994.
