El Monte Man Shot to Death by Deputies

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot a 25-year-old El Monte man to death after he pointed a loaded handgun at them in Charter Oak Park in unincorporated Covina, authorities said.

Michael Aragon Nides died about 11 p.m. Sunday after deputies shot him several times in the upper body, Deputy Matthew C. Rodriguez said.

Deputies responding to a “shots fired” call at the park in the 20000 block of East Covina Boulevard saw Nides with the handgun and ordered him to drop the weapon, Rodriguez said. Nides refused to comply and instead pointed the gun at them, forcing the deputies to fire, Rodriguez said.

A loaded handgun was recovered near the body, Rodriguez said.

Investigators were trying to determine if Nides fired his weapon at officers and why he would not comply with requests to drop it.
