NEWBURY PARK : Student Arrested After Principal Tackled
A 17-year-old student who tackled his principal during Newbury Park High School’s graduation ceremony has been arrested on a felony charge of battery of a school official, authorities said Saturday.
The disgruntled student charged and knocked down Principal Charles E. Eklund about 7 p.m. Friday during the high school’s commencement. Eklund, who suffered minor head injuries, continued the ceremony after sheriff’s deputies rushed off with the youth.
After the graduation, Eklund was treated and released from Los Robles Medical Center, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department officials said.
The male student, who was not identified because of his age, was barred from the ceremony because he missed rehearsal, officials said.
The youth will be charged with a felony because the attack occurred during enforcement of school regulations, according to Sgt. Robert Sparks.
