EL SERENO : Foundation Grant to Help 70 Students
A youth sports and academic enrichment program at a Jefferson Park school has received a grant of more than $64,000 to duplicate its efforts on the Eastside.
The grant from the Amateur Athletic Foundation means that the Los Angeles Sports Academy will be able to include more than 70 children from El Sereno Junior High School in its fall program.
The two-pronged program helps participants excel during school hours with the use of a specially designed curriculum that uses sports examples to make math and reading assignments more appealing. After school, the program becomes a combination study hall/basketball clinic with coaches doubling as tutors and helping students with homework as well as their jump shot.
