U.S. Wants Breakthrough on Japan Trade Talks: The Clinton Administration said there must significant progress made this week in the current round of negotiations in order to resolve a long-simmering trade dispute. The negotiations in Vancouver, Canada, focus on autos: The United States wants Japan to purchase more American-made auto parts, but the Japanese have refused. The United States has hinted that it is prepared to impose trade sanctions against the Japanese if there is no headway soon. U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor and Japanese Trade Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto are scheduled to meet today.
