Vons Earnings Up 17%: The Arcadia-based supermarket chain posted net income of $14 million, or 32 cents a share, in the first quarter, up from $9 million, or 21 cents a share, a year earlier. The year-ago quarter included a charge of $3 million related to the Northridge earthquake. Revenue remained unchanged at $1.14 billion, although Vons Cos. had 21 fewer stores in the quarter than it did a year ago. Vons, which runs 325 stores under the Vons and Pavilions names, attributed the improvement to the financial benefits of its 1994 restructuring.
