Deputies Dig Up, Blow Up Bomb

San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies blew up a bomb buried near a eucalyptus grove in Fontana on Monday after a recently arrested man told them where to find it.
Deputy Henry Calderilla said two members of the sheriff’s bomb squad dug up the device but backed away when they saw what appeared to be a timer. A robot borrowed from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was later used to place an explosive charge that blew up the device.
Calderilla said a man jailed in Riverside County on assault charges informed booking deputies of the bomb’s location.
The bomb was buried in the eucalyptus grove near railroad tracks and property owned by a propane gas company but was not located near the firm’s buildings, Calderilla said.
“Basically, it was just in the tree line,” he said. “It was not next to a building or anything. It’s kind of weird.”
