“While You Were Sleeping” was the weekend box-office sleeper, leading a strong overall surge in ticket sales with $9.3 million. The Hollywood Pictures romantic comedy, starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman, was followed by last week’s leader, Columbia’s “Bad Boys.” The explosive buddy-cop drama was down only 36% with $7 million, for a three-week total of $44.1 million. David Caruso’s star turn in “Kiss of Death,” his first project since his controversial exit from “NYPD Blue” to make movies, fared moderately. “Kiss of Death,” a Fox remake of a 1947 film noir, grossed $5.3 million for the No. 3 spot and performed best in urban markets.
