2 Carriers Hope to Boost Cargo Operations: The moves by Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp. come as domestic airlines are placing growing emphasis on cargo operations as part of a bid to increase revenue and cut costs in order to return to sustained profitability after years of losses. However, cargo operations remain an extremely small part of domestic carriers’ business compared with passenger operations. Minneapolis-based Northwest, the nation’s fourth-largest airline, is the only domestic carrier that has a fleet devoted exclusively to cargo.
