SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Smoking to Be Banned on School District Property

Smoking will be prohibited on all Capistrano Unified School District property after June 30 under a ban approved by trustees.

District officials had first hoped to exempt after-hours bingo games, which raise money for the district. But doing so would mean the loss of some special funding, according to U.S. Health and Human Services regulations.

Nearly $200,000 in state and federal funding for the Capistrano Unified School District is tied to a requirement that the district make its properties smoke-free after June 30.

Trustees in November had approved a tobacco ban that would exempt bingo games. The revision was approved this week.

The ban applies to district staff, students, volunteers, contractors and vendors. It also extends to people attending activities on school district property.
