Mike Shwam
Edison, Junior
Baseball/Pitcher
Until last week, not much had been going right for Edison baseball players, including Shwam. Coach Tom Duggan even considered sending him down to the junior varsity as a motivational tool. Instead, Duggan gave him a lecture and a start in the semifinals of the Coachella Valley tournament Wednesday. Shwam responded with a brilliant performance, giving up only two hits and striking out 14 in an 8-0 victory over Beaumont. “He was getting stronger as he went,” Duggan said. “He just mowed them down.” In the championship game, also Wednesday, he broke a 5-5 tie with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth and pitched the sixth in relief, striking out two as the Chargers (7-8) beat Saugus, 10-5, to extend their winning streak to five.
