A 36-year-old Glendale man who was riding on a body board off Venice Beach is missing and feared dead after a late afternoon accident in which his companion, a 24-year-old Venice man, was rescued.
The accident occurred 50 feet past the Venice Beach breakwater and 150 feet from shore shortly before 6 p.m. Los Angeles County lifeguard Lt. Don Souther said a lifeguard onshore saw the man drifting into a trouble spot and warned him over a public address system to move to a safer area. But after hearing the warning, the man inexplicably let go of his board and fell into the water.
The lifeguard who issued the warning swam out but was unable to find the man. Four scuba divers and two helicopters were later called in to look for the man. The search for the missing man was expected to resume today.
