Report Says Lanier Will Replace Nelson With Warriors
Don Nelson reportedly will step down as coach and general manager of the Golden State Warriors on Monday and will be replaced by assistant Bob Lanier.
An ESPN report Saturday said Nelson’s son, assistant coach Donnie Nelson, will also step down.
The San Jose Mercury News had reported in its Saturday editions that Nelson would go, though new Warrior owner Chris Cohen denied it, saying that Nelson’s health might prompt him to leave.

All-pro wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, recovering from postseason surgery to repair a potentially career-ending neck ailment, will not play in 1995, Green Bay Packer Coach Mike Holmgren said.

Susan Auch of Winnipeg beat Bonnie Blair in a second consecutive World Cup 500-meter speedskating race at Calgary, setting up head-to-head competition between them today.
Auch broke her own Canadian record by winning in 39.15 seconds, 0.03 seconds ahead of Blair.
Maryann Baribault of La Canada won the World Women’s Junior Luge Championship at Lake Placid, N.Y., finishing her two runs on the 800-meter Olympic track in 1 minute 17.595 seconds.
Rintje Ritsma of the Netherlands took the lead halfway through the men’s World Speedskating Championships at Baselga di Pine, Italy, although his best showing in two races was a third-place finish.
Olympic champion Vladimir Smirnov of Kazakhstan raced to a 54.5-second victory over Alexei Prokurorov of Russia in the men’s 50-kilometer classical-style race at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival at Oslo.

Andre Agassi’s dismantled MaliVai Washington, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals of the San Jose Open and will play Michael Chang, a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, winner over Jim Courier, in today’s finals.
Third-seeded Magdalena Maleeva took advantage of 14 double faults to beat second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, and reach the final of the Ameritech Cup tournament in Chicago, where she will play Lisa Raymond, who ousted Zina Garrison Jackson, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Top-seeded Boris Becker needed only about an hour to defeat Olivier Delaitre of France, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Marseille Open and will play Czech Daniel Vacek, who beat another Frenchman, Lionel Roux, 6-1, 7-5.
South Africa’s Wayne Ferreira reached the Dubai Open final, beating Spain’s Javier Sanchez, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Ferreira will face unseeded Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy today.
Track and Field
Debbi Kilpatrick-Morris of Berea, Ohio, set an event record, 2 hours 34 minutes 43 seconds, in winning the Women’s National Marathon championship on the same Columbia, S.C., course on which the women’s Olympic trials will be run.
Colin Jackson had the fastest 60-meter hurdles time of the year, 7.39 seconds, in a dual meet against France in Glasgow, Scotland.
UCLA’s Dawn Dumble set personal and meet records by putting the shot 58 feet 8 3/4 inches in winning at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The Bruins swept the event, with John Godina winning the men’s shotput with a toss of 66-8.

Joe Case’s Mongoose from Long Beach Yacht Club led the fleet of six ULDB 70s in their pursuit of earlier starters in Del Rey YC’s race from Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallarta after the first day.
Briton Mark Foster’s 23.55 seconds in the 50-meter butterfly and New Zealander Danyon Loader’s 3:40.46 in the 400 freestyle set short-course world swimming records at a World Cup meet in Sheffield, England.
