NHL ROUNDUP : Kidd Earns Shutout in Flames’ Rout
Trevor Kidd stopped 34 shots and registered the first shutout of his career as the Calgary Flames ended a four-game winless streak against the Stars with a 6-0 victory Saturday night at Dallas.
The Flames jumped on the sluggish Stars for a 3-0 first-period advantage on goals by Mike Sullivan, Mark Greig and Steve Chiasson.
“Getting the lead gave our guys a lot of confidence,” Kidd said.
Calgary turned the game into a rout with three goals in the final 6:06 by Theo Fleury, Paul Kruse and Dan Keczmer.
San Jose 1, Vancouver 1--Trevor Linden of the Canucks and Tom Pederson of the Sharks scored first-period goals in a tie at Vancouver, moving San Jose into first place in the Pacific Division.
San Jose goaltender Wade Flaherty made 27 saves. Vancouver’s Kirk McLean stopped 23 shots.
Pittsburgh 3, Montreal 1--The Penguins remained the league’s only unbeaten team, improving to 10-0-1 with a victory over the Canadiens behind two goals by Jaromir Jagr at Pittsburgh.
Quebec 5, Ottawa 2--Martin Rucinsky went end to end to score late in the second period, leading the Nordiques to their fifth consecutive victory at Quebec.
Winnipeg 3, St. Louis 2--Alexei Zhamnov scored all three Jet goals in a victory at St. Louis.
It was the third hat trick of Zhamnov’s career. Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 32 shots for the Jets.
New York Islanders 2, Buffalo 1--Jamie McLennan stopped 26 shots and goals by Ray Ferraro and Troy Loney helped the Islanders snap a three-game losing streak at Uniondale, N.Y.
Boston 1, Washington 1--Vincent Riendeau stopped all 10 shots he faced after Blaine Lacher left with an injury, and Dave Reid scored for the Bruins in a tie at Boston.
Rick Tabaracci made 25 saves for the Capitals.
New York Rangers 3, Tampa Bay 2--Steve Larmer and Sergei Nemchinov scored 21 seconds apart in the second period to give the Rangers a victory at St. Petersburg, Fla., though New York got off only 15 shots.
Philadelphia 3, New Jersey 1--Brent Fedyk scored the tie-breaking goal 31 seconds into the third period and Dominic Roussel made 25 saves to lead the Flyers to a victory at East Rutherford, N.J.
Florida 4, Hartford 3--Jody Hull had a goal and an assist in a two-minute span to lead the Panthers to victory in the first of a seven-game, two-week home stand.
