Simpson Case Used to Avoid Death Penalty
SHALIMAR, Fla. — A woman convicted of murdering her husband avoided the electric chair after her lawyer argued that California isn’t seeking the death penalty against O.J. Simpson for a worse crime.
Myra Vaivada was convicted last month of shooting Robert Vaivada to death Aug. 30, 1993. Jurors recommended against a death sentence, and a judge sentenced her Friday to life in prison.
“The state of California has waived the death penalty,” her lawyer, Larry Simpson, told jurors. “Surely this crime does not come anywhere close” to those O.J. Simpson is on trial for.
