NEWPORT BEACH — A Costa Mesa man was killed Friday night when the car he was riding in careened into a traffic signal after being hit by another car.
Bryan Hawthorne, 38, was pronounced dead of head injuries at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach after the accident, which left his 24-year-old wife, Shawn, with minor injuries.
According to Jim Carson of the Newport Beach Police Department, the accident occurred about 9:45 p.m. at Irvine Boulevard and Westcliff Drive when a car driven by a 16-year-old Costa Mesa resident collided with the black Ferrari driven by Shawn Hawthorne, causing it to hit the traffic signal.
Carson said that neither the teen-age driver nor his passenger--both of whom police declined to identify because of their ages--were injured. No arrests were made and the accident remains under investigation, Carson said.
